Can Chewing Gum Help You Lose Weight?

In fact, a study newly given by scientists at the University of Texas, USA, it is an unrealistic inference. The study has proven that gum is not a miracle weight-loss method as you think, not to mention, it makes you reduce cravings for nutritious fruits.

Normally, we deduce that chewing gum will curb our cravings, but the truth is much worse. Far from making you eat less, the taste of gum causes you to choose foods needed wrongly.
In the first experiment, 44 participants went through three stages: one time they chewed mint flavor, another time they used fruit flavor, and the final time they did not.

After each experiment, they filled in a questionnaire and played the game in which rewards were food which is beneficial or harmful to health (the participants were free to choose their favorite games). On the average, each player narrated the decrease in hunger after chewing gum. The point is: After chewing mint gum, they ate less beneficial food - but still ate the same amount of harmful food as they used fruit one or did not use any one. It can be said that although a fresh mint one decreases your hunger, it is also the culprit making you pick a bag of potato chips instead of a nutritious orange.

In the second experiment, 54 participants were given a diet diary to write in three weeks. In the first two weeks, they were instructed to chew gum before noshing, eating meals or drinking anything (except non-energy drinks such as water or black coffee). And results were surprising while the amount of food they consumed in snacks was not much but the amount of food in meals increased. They also chose less nutritious food in these weeks when fruits and vegetables were no longer their primary choices. On the average, total energy intake per week was equal despite they chewed gum or not.

The reason explaining for this problem is: The taste of mint does not get along with fruits and vegetables according to the words of Dr. Christine Harris, Ohio State University, USA. Gum can help you throw away the habit of snacking, but concurrently, it also prevents you from picking foods with health benefits. In addition, noshing is not an entirely bad thing if you select the right foods which can provide you more nutrients and keep you away from excessive meals.
